Dr. Obioha (Obi) Chukwunyere Ukoumunne has been appointed as a senior lecturer in medical statistics by the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry.

Dr. Ukoumunne comes to the Peninsula Medical School from the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit (CEBU) at Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, Royal Children’s Hospital in Parkville, Australia where he was a post doctoral research fellow and senior research fellow in medical statistics.

He achieved his PhD at King’s College London in 2004 and between 1995 and 2005 held a series of posts at the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals in London, the Imperial College School of Medicine and King’s College London before taking up his post in Australia. He has a particular interest in developing methods for analysing the results of complex trials.

Dr. Ukoumunne will join a growing number of statisticians in the College and its partner universities who contribute to a wide range of research that requires the analysis of population and research data. Such work includes widely publicised research such as the effect of chemicals commonly used in everyday products on human health (such as Bisphenol A and PFOA); the relationship between vitamin D and dementia and ageing; other ageing-related issues; and childhood obesity.

Dr. Ukoumunne’s main role will be to help to develop research within the Peninsula Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (PenCLAHRC). PenCLAHRC is a partnership between all of the local NHS organisations, the College of Medicine and Dentistry and the Universities of Plymouth and Exeter which aims to improve health through carrying out medical research which directly addresses local health needs.

Professor Stuart Logan, Director of PenCLAHRC and Cerebra Professor of Paediatric Epidemiology at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, said: “We are delighted that Obi is joining our team, where his skills and expertise particularly in regard to cluster randomised trials will significantly enhance our work. The  medical statisticians in the team play a key part in ensuring that we are able to do really cutting edge research. We are determined to continue to produce world leading medical research in the College and attracting world class methodologists is an important part of this process.”
